Will Charity Hack have you cleaning your plates?

One of the many things that excites me about Charity Hack is the opportunity of getting to know some of the cool people behind the amazing charities that will be taking part.

And since I'm a sharing type of guy I thought it would be nice if everybody could get to know them a little bit better.

You never know, you might be inspired to volunteer or donate to one of them because the work they do really excites you.

Laura Ryder (@laurajryder) has been speaking with all the Charity Hack organisations and we'll be sharing her profiles of them over the next few weeks to help you get to know them a little bit better.

First up, we find out why we'll all be cleaning our plates

Welcome Hacker #8

The latest addition to the Charity Hack team is Maria Martin who brings a wealth of project management experience within the third sector as well as a touch of glamour :-)

Have look at her bio

Maria is a self-confessed beauty and cosmetics geek, a passion that led her to work for favourite charity “Look Good Feel Better” – a service that helps people manage the visible side-effects of their cancer treatment.

As Programme Manager of Look Good Feel Better Ireland she is part of a worldwide cancer support service that exists in 25 countries, having started off 5 years ago as a volunteer. Qualifying for the Vodafone World of Difference Awards led to her becoming a full time member of staff and having gone from strength to strength; reaching 1,000 cancer patients a year she has now spearheaded the transition from an Irish Cancer Society service to it becoming a stand-alone charity.
Through her various roles Maria has liaised with over 60 cancer support centres nationwide through the Irish Cancer Society’s Affiliation programme and prior to this Maria’s experience includes Event management, Recruitment and Training.

Welcome to Hacker number 7

2 new hacker announcements in 1 day!
Well now I'd like to introduce you all to our first overseas participant in Charity Hack, Holly Lambert.
I think she says all you need to know in her bio:

I have been a professional fundraiser for 5 years specialising in community fundraising and building something from nothing. I'm currently the Area Fundraiser for the East of England for the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society and before that was Fundraising Manger for Macmillan Cancer Support. I was also Operations Director at The Hub, Islington - a business centre for social entrepreneurs and I've been involved in starting various volunteer projects such as a fundraising campaign to buy cancer patients new wigs and a series of food based events that aimed to bring local community closer together. I am constantly inspired by the people I meet through my work - their dedication, their perseverance and their passion. You will often find me quoting 'Be the change', focusing on the positive...and asking when lunch is. I am solution focused and work fast so the Charity Hack is the perfect event for me. Other things you should know - I'm a big Norwich City FC fan, have a tendency to overuse the word 'Amazing!' and have the two most beautiful nieces in the world.

Welcome to Hacker #6

We're now in full volunteer Chacker recruitment mode and I'm delighted to welcome one time wannabe physicist, possibly the worlds greatest Angela Lansbury fan and also one of the most talented digi media experts around, Donal Mulligan.

Here's Donal's bio:

Dónal Mulligan is a lecturer in online communications at Dublin City University, where he's also pursuing PhD studies in social media analysis. He's taught web design and development, project management and interactive applications for 5 years, which motivates him to keep a close eye on current and emerging trends.

Dónal has previously worked as a consultant in corporate communications and branding for SMEs, NGOs and multinationals and has experience in designing online communications campaigns and managing web development projects in the voluntary and charity sector. He's been involved in event design and  promotion and is especially interested in how creative and inexpensive video and social media campaigns can bring substantial attention for low cost.

When not teaching or furiously writing a paper the day before a deadline, he enjoys watching a good episode of "Murder, She Wrote". Especially that one where Jessica Fletcher acquits a dog of murder. They just don't make TV like that these days.

The hardest email I've ever sent

Well the shortlisting has been done and the 5 charities that will take part in Charity Hack have been contacted and have accepted their places. Over the next few days I'll start sharing who they are and introducing you to their stories but not tonight.

I've just had to send the hardest email I've ever sent to let the unsuccessful organizations know that we couldn't invite them to Charity Hack.

I will consider it one of the great honors of my career that so many organizations applied to be part of Charity Hack.

They put all of their passions and dreams into their applications. They shared their stories and their challenges. I learned about problems that I never knew existed and of people who are fighting fights that nobody else seems to care about. There are many heroes in this world that will never have bridges named after them but who dedicate their lives to improving this little world of ours.

I would have loved to have so many more of the organizations take part in Charity Hack. There was none that weren't worthy but we could only pick 5. As I said I will take time to talk about the chosen organizations over the next few days but for now I'd like you to spare thought for those that weren't chosen and hope that they continue to work to improve this planet.

Kevin
